Eliot Lane Historic Landmark District

City landmark
Eliot Lane is a diminutive Long Beach historic district comprised of a single block of small homes built by the Long Beach firm of Boland and Smith in 1923. It is an early subdivision, in the history of subdivisions, of modest homes built to accommodate workers during an employment explosion following the discovery of oil in nearby Signal Hill and the continuing and accelerating development in Long Beach and the port. At one time these homes were almost identical, mainly in the popular Mission Revival style with some in the Craftsman style )that was already passing out of favor). The street has unusual visual unity and cohesion, providing a snapshot of Long Beach in the twenties. All the original construction remains in place today. The homes, with 600 to 800 square feet with one or two bedrooms, sold for about $2,100 (adjusted for inflation).
